What’s in a Standard Assessment?

For £295 - a bargain, honestly - we’ll provide you with a report in plain English that normally includes:

  • An online patent search and commentary, including copies or extracts of patents that we think are relevant to your idea. We also explain our search methodology so you can check our findings or search further yourself.
  • An online search for similar and competing products and market information. Again, we’ll include copies of key findings and details of how we’ve searched.
  • Our opinion of your idea’s commercial and intellectual property (IP) potential.
  • Comments on design and technical aspects of your idea.
  • Our overall conclusion about the strengths and weaknesses of your idea, and practical advice on what you might consider doing next.
  • Where appropriate, details of possible sources of further assistance. It will be up to you to decide whether to contact them.

How can an independent invention assessment help?

'One of the most important things for an inventor to know is when he's wasting his time'
Dave Melton, inventor of Firetrace fire protection products (www.firetrace.co.uk)

In our experience, the most common reason why inventors don’t get anywhere with their inventions is a lack of basic due diligence. This requires inventors to do their level best to remedy or at least identify weaknesses in their ideas before presenting them to companies or funding bodies. And all inventions have weaknesses of some kind - even those that go on to be great products.

What does due diligence involve? To get some idea, look at the questions in our Submission form. Novelty and IP potential, market potential, threat from competition, technical feasibility - these and other aspects must be addressed, analysed and reported on.

In theory, inventors can do this for themselves. In practice, most don’t have the experience to do it well, particularly when it comes to patent searches. In any case, a self-assessment rarely carries the same weight as an independent report.

The crunch for a ‘diligence free’ invention comes when it’s presented to a company or funding body. Then one of two things happens:

  • The organisation does its own searches and finds serious flaws. The findings may be over-pessimistic, but without evidence the inventor can’t argue back.
  • The organisation expects the inventor to present a case that includes due diligence - but the inventor doesn’t.

Either way, most organisations will conclude that the inventor can’t be taken seriously.

Our Standard Assessment provides you with the basic evidence you need to (a) inform you more about your own idea and (b) help persuade potential backers that you can be taken seriously.

Other benefits

  • For a modest outlay you could save a huge amount of wasted money and effort. Every year inventors sink thousands of pounds into ideas that will never earn them a penny. Don’t let that be you.
  • Forewarned is forearmed. No invention gets an easy ride. People will try to pick holes in your idea, for both positive and negative reasons. We tell you where we think those holes are, so you get a chance to fix them.
  • Even if an organisation does look at your idea, they may not tell you what they really think, so the experience may leave you no wiser. Our report gives you the honest, impartial feedback you need.
  • Many busy organisations will spend only a few minutes considering an external invention before rejecting it. Including a positive report from us can help capture their interest.
